Hiking in the Chiemgau Mountains

Hardly anyone can resist: When you stand on the terrace of the Residenz Heinz Winkler and catch a glimpse of the green Alpine meadows of the imposing Kampenwand, you can feel it, this unrestrained desire to simply set off and walk up there. Those who are not so keen on hiking may take the funicular. High up on the peak, you will be rewarded with a unique view and the feeling of enjoying life to the fullest. Royal Palace Herrenchiemsee Arrangement

In 1873 King Ludwig II of Bavaria acquired the Herreninsel (Men's Island) as the location for his Royal Palace. Modelled on Versailles, this palace was built as a "Temple of Fame" for King Louis XIV of France, whom the Bavarian monarch fervently admired. The actual building of this "Bavarian Versailles" was preceded by a total of 13 planning stages. When Ludwig II died in 1886 the palace was still incomplete.
